Microsoft have replaced BPOS. It is definitely an upgrade. At Cloud Hypermarket we have been monitoring the progress of the Wave 14 (codename Union) release of BPOS and waiting for the news which has finally arrived. This is a lot more than a rebrand, Microsoft are significantly upgrading BPOS and the long anticipated release of Office 365 can be seen as more of a re-release than an upgrade. Microsoft Office 365 looks to be the platform on which Microsoft Online Services are going to be built upon and the moment we’ve been waiting for ever since Steve Balmer announced ‘We’re All In’, which has since become a Microsoft slogan.

‘Microsoft Office 365: The Power to Think Big and Be Small, to Be Big and Act Fast’ is the title of Microsoft’s announcement of Office 365. They refer to Office 365 as ‘a new service that brings familiar applications, including Office desktop software and Office Web Apps, together with SharePoint, Exchange and Lync in the cloud, for the first time.’ The essential change to the BPOS package is the inclusion of Microsoft’s new communication package. The Lync offering replaces Office Communications Online and Live Meeting in a new combined communication package and is a significant improvement on its predecessors, whilst SharePoint and Exchange will move to the 2010 offerings.

Most significantly though is the inclusion of Web Apps. Users will be able to use the office web apps, something customers have been asking about for a long time. This user interface and combination of applications will mean that business users can enjoy the familiarity of Microsoft Office with full Cloud advantages. They will also make a full office suite available on a pay per user per month basis as well as an optional add on of the Microsoft Dynamics package. All of this will surely make Office 365 the most complete and appealing Cloud offering on the Market. Although, as a provider to many smaller businesses, the following quote from Microsoft was particularly interesting: “Office 365 is more than a new brand. It’s a progressive approach to cloud applications,” said Kurt DelBene, president of the Microsoft Office Division. “We designed Office 365 to work for a business of one – or a business of one million and one.” Meaning there will be no lower limit on users, a bonus for Start ups, Sole Traders, franchise owners and the smallest of companies. They will benefit the most as when it comes to keeping in touch with your office email, documents, communications and programs, the smaller your company, the bigger the challenge.
